Walker Run 2013: Sara’s Legacy Continues
My greatest hope is that, again, that no one will say ‘I lost my battle with cancer.’
I hate, HATE that phrase. Cancer will not win. Jesus will win. End of story.”
– Sara Walker, June 11, 2012
On August 28, 2012, Sara Walker’s battle against stage 4 colon cancer came to an end, but her ministry and impact in this world had just begun. A wish of Sara’s, from the onset of the Walker Run in 2011, was to donate some of the proceeds to charity, and, beginning in 2013, that wish will be fulfilled through The Sara Walker Foundation.
The Sara Walker Foundation exists to continue Sara’s ministry of encouragement and outreach in the name of Jesus Christ. A new version of the “Savoring the Day” website, publication of Sara’s writings, and her shared vision for the work at Blessings Hospital for women and children in Malawi, Africa are a few of the ways the foundation will continue to honor Sara and share her powerful story of hope and inspiration. Proceeds from the 2013 Walker Run will support these and future endeavors of The Sara Walker Foundation. The third annual Walker Run will be Saturday, April 13 at Brentwood High School.
Walker Run History
In 2011, the Belmont Physical Therapy class of 2003 organized the first annual “Walker Run/Live for Today 5K” to show support for fellow classmate, Sara Walker, in her battle with colon cancer. In just two years, over 900 people helped to raise over $50,000 for the Walker family. Going forward, this event will benefit The Sara Walker Foundation and serve as a way to remember and honor her life.
Sara’s Story
Sara Walker was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in an unrelated medical test just four weeks after the sudden, full-term still birth of her daughter Anna in December 2010. After 16 rounds of chemotherapy, two rounds of vectibix and three clinical research trials, Sara’s earthly struggle with cancer ended in August of 2012. However, through her candid blogs and life, Sara inspired over 700,000 website visitors and countless others during this time. The journey in her words, as well as those of her family, can be found at www.savoringtheday.com and www.caringbridge.org/visit/sarawalker.
The Sara Walker Foundation
Through the Sara Walker Foundation, work has already begun on the Sara Walker Village in Malawi, Africa. The village will provide housing for nurses, doctors and volunteers working at the hospital. Additionally, a nursing scholarship fund in Sara’s name is in place for training at the hospital. And of course, proceeds from the third annual Walker Run will continue to provide support for Sara’s boys Camden and Scott.
The 2013 Sponsors, Belmont Physical Therapy Class of 2003 and STAR Physical Therapy, invite you to join us at 7:30am on April 13, 2013 at Brentwood High School for third annual Walker Run!!
